Customer Reviews
I live in a circa 1960 house so we're not exactly air tight (more frequent fillings for a particular humidity level).
I've tried several models of humidifiers over the years. My first Holmes 3500 is still going strong after more than 10 years of use. I purchased a second one a few years ago largely to lengthen the time we go from full to empty and partially to help distribute the moisture better in a 2000 sq foot house. (Note that with forced hot air we probably don't need two humidifier locations since the air gets moved around anyway, but not having to refill every day when the temp drops to 10F here in MA is helpful.)
The only reason I don't give it a 5 is that the float valve that detects whether you're low on water didn't last. I don't really care about this since gently tilting the two water tanks when I walk past them tells me how much water is left and there for provides more advanced warning about running out of water.
The humidistat is consistent, we keep our humidity level lever at or slightly above the 1/3 mark unless someone is sick then we raise it to about 1/2. We don't know what % humidity this maps too, we just use subjective comfort levels to determine the setting.
One of the problems I've seen with other humidifier tanks, especially clear plastic models, is that they break too easily. I'm about to order (direct from Holmes) a replacement tank for $15. My previous humidifier company wanted $25 to replace a "designed to break" tank... I threw it out instead. Considering how many times I've dropped these tanks, the fact that this is my _first_ 3500 tank replacement is remarkable.
I didn't bother installing the wheels because I have no need to move the thing. When I'm about to clean it I just let it run dry to reduce weight and then carry it to the tub. I keep mine in a plastic shoe tray just in case it leaks, however I've never seen a drop of water in that 1/2" tall tray so that's just me being paranoid.
We have hardwood floors so it has always been kept on a shoe/boot tray, just in case, but it has never leaked.
We have forced air gas heat and without this Holmes humidifier we would be miserable during the winter months. When we first bought it (1999) we were in a three level townhouse at 1500 sq ft and now it's keeping 2 levels at about 2500 sq ft just as comfortable.
With kids and pets our filter is changed every 2-3 months and the base reservoir gets a cleaning half way and at the end of the season. Have used other types/styles of humidifiers and cleaning was always a pain but this one is much easier.
We keep our humidistat at around the 3/4 mark and our thermostat is set at 69 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night. These settings keep us the most comfortable and maintain our humidity gauge readings (accuracy unknown) between 50-60%. We would buy this humidifier again without any hesitation!
